Day 3. BOISE: Jaialdi and Basque Shepherds

Breakfast and departure to make a route through the mining towns.

HISTORY: “During the early decades of the 20th century, small towns throughout southern Idaho had boarding houses, filled to capacity, with Basque shepherds. The largest concentrations of Basques were in the Treasure Valley (around Boise), in towns like Emmett and Nampa,... but Basques also settled in towns along the Snake River Plain, beginning in Ontario, Oregon. to as far east as Pocatello, and including the towns of Mountain Home, Shoshone, Gooding, Twin Falls, and Rupert. Hailey's town also had Basque families who ran Basque hotels and restaurants.

Mining in northern Idaho, in Mullan, attracted a few Basques but only lasted 14 years, from 1925 to 1939. Recently a logging mill in Spokane, Washington, has placed many Basques in northern Idaho, near the City of Coeur d'Alene.

Many of those who came seeking their fortune returned to the Basque Country and the children of those who stayed are more American in their behavior (language, philosophy, etc.) than anything else, but still define themselves as Basque. It is something that they feel and imagine, it is a transnational and diasporic identity”. Return to Boise in the afternoon to participate in Jaialdi activities:
